eating the rainbow

Blog_TwinsKitchenEatingtheRainbow

the thing about eating healthy is making sure you’re getting enough fresh fruits and vegetables every day. one trick is to look at the food on your plate and ask yourself if it’s colourful enough to eat. if not, how can you add more color to your food?

here’s one idea from i won! organics ambassadors ashley and brittney from @twinskitchen. they like to ‘eat the rainbow’ every meal. with yummy fresh ingredients and an added protein crunch from our sea salt crackers, this is one plant-based meal to make any vegan proud. check it out:

eating the rainbow from @twinskitchen

ingredients:

  • chickpeas
  • ginger and garlic marinated tofu
  • sautéed kale
  • bell peppers
  • spring mix
  • avocado
  • spiralized carrots
  • i won! organics sea salt protein chips

preparation:

  • assemble ingredients into large salad bowls and use your inner creativity to make a beautiful arrangement of colourful ingredients. it’s that simple, and tons of fun.

following a healthy lifestyle is something twin sisters ashley and brittney love doing every day. they founded @twinskitchen on instagram about five years ago as a creative outlet for their artistic passion and love for healthy food. they believe staying healthy is all about “balance and mindset,” and they “love experimenting with different recipes to make it fun.” they told us:

overall, listening to your body is the best thing you can do to keep a positive mind and healthy soul.

not surprisingly, @twinskitchen has two i won! moments to share with us:

we get that #iwonfeeling after an intense workout when we pushed through on a day we didn’t feel like going to the gym. but also that #iwonfeeling happens when we make someone smile, whether it be through a gesture of kindness, a simple compliment, or a listening ear. it’s the little moments like that in life that count.

healhty snacking on the road

keeping fit on the road is never easy. but when traveling is part of your job, you have to find a way to make it work. if you want to stick to your healthy lifestyle, you can’t throw it all away every time you’re away from home.

i won! organics ambassador timothy smith (aka @timsmith_usmc79) travels a lot for work. as an active duty marine with more than 18 years in the service, his job takes him all over the u.s., sometimes for weeks at a time. he has a few secrets for staying fit on the road:

a few tips for staying healthy on the road

  1. prep your food for your trip.
  2. take enough food to cover you for the trip, as well as a few extras.
  3. pack a meal prep cooler bag with enough food to last you.
  4. pack only healthy snacks with high nutritional value.
  5. always remember to pack some water.
  6. never leave home without a backup workout plan and equipment like resistance bands or trx straps.

what runners eat to refuel

what runners eat to refuel

runners know that after a long run, you need to fuel up and replenish those hard-working muscles. you need nutrient-dense foods with enough carbs, protein and fats to aid in your post-workout recovery.

here’s one suggestion from i won! organics ambassador and nutrition health coach, edith agoston that we like to think of as a redefined huevos habaneros:

what runners eat to refuel

i sautéed some onions and added in organic refried pinto beans, then fried a pasture raised egg from @greenbowfarm and seasoned it with sea salt, pepper and hungarian paprika. (i always have a mishap in this step!) then i added in half of an avocado, sunflower shoots from my local @seattlefarmersmkts, a scoop of island salsa from @traderjoeslist and some of the bbq flavored tortilla chips from @iwonorganics.

packed full of healthy carbs, fiber, good fats and of course, protein, this recovery meal is exactly what a runner needs after a grueling workout. edith likes to buy local, organic foods and incorporates this healthy way of eating into her overall fitness program. she told us:

i stay healthy by listening to my body, drinking ionized alkaline water, eating local seasonal and organic produce that i buy at my local farmer’s market, sleeping well, practicing meditation and of course, getting plenty of exercise!

besides running, edith enjoys biking, swimming, and paddle boarding, and she’s been practicing bikram yoga for the past 15 years. for edith, that #iwonfeeling is all about staying active and living life to the fullest. she told us:

i am most happy when i feel that i am following the correct path, the path that was intended for me. these days that means connecting with more people in the health and wellness world, and living my healthiest life, spending time on the beach in west seattle with those closest to me, continuing to learn and improve my skills as a health coach, and nourishing my body with nutrient-dense foods.

everybody flip for national chip and dip day

Everybody Flip National Chip & Dip Day

round these parts, when it’s time to celebrate, out come the chips and dip. it’s such a perfect combo they had to dedicate one day a year to it just to celebrate. so happy national chip and dip day!

chips and dip are about as american as you can get. back in the day, making dip for your chips meant opening up a packet of lipton’s onion soup mix and adding it to a tub of sour cream. some people got a bit fancy and added cream cheese to thicken up the dip, others added chives and red pepper. it was the beginning of an all-american favorite and the genesis of a snacking tradition.

where’s the dip?

the superbowl wouldn’t be the same without your favorite dip. christmas would be amiss without dip. birthdays and new year’s just wouldn’t have the same crunch without the necessary dip.

from onion dip came veggie dip, spinach dip, cheese dip, guacamole, hummus, bean dip, salsa, artichoke dip, roasted red pepper dip, crab dip, shrimp dip, and more. once we got a taste for dips, there was no stopping us. now dipping is a favorite pastime and a traditional way to celebrate and snack.

chip and dip responsibly!

but aren’t you glad you can still chip and dip without blowing your diet? with i won! organic protein chips you can. we’re all about being part of the chip-and-dip tradition but with a twist. i won! organics is part of a new generation of snacks and our chips are healthy! when you open up a bag of i won! protein chips, and dip into one of our wholesome recipes, you’ll experience a whole new way of snacking. our chips constitute a healthy micro-meal that will fit well with your macros and complement your diet.
