healthy the way mother nature intended

picture this: you’re leaving the gym after one of the best workouts ever. today you were in the zone. you broke one of your personal bests and you’re feeling good. you can’t wait to get home and cook up one of your winning post-workout meals. let’s take a look at what’s on the menu today.

if you’re like us, you’ll stay within your macros and prepare a meal containing protein, veggies and carbs. one of our favorite muscle-building meals is baked chicken breast (skinless, boneless) with dijon mustard and italian herbs. on the side, a crispy spinach salad with roasted red peppers and zucchini, topped with strawberries and a few i won! ranch protein chips for added flavor and crunch. for dessert, a square of 85% dark chocolate and a cup of green tea.

sounds amazing, right? you’d be surprised. check it out.

the only thing that is 100% organic and non-gmo on this menu is the protein chips. everything else has either been genetically modified in some way, or contains high levels of pesticides and herbicides. shocking! after all that hard work in the gym, you want to refuel your body with the healthiest food you can buy. not serve up something that mother nature would shake her head at!

so what do you do? organic food is expensive, and gmo – what’s that? so many labels to read and stickers to watch for – it’s all so confusing!

one of the labels you need to watch for is the Non-GMO Project Verified label. if a product carries this label, it means that every single ingredient has been tested for purity all along the food chain. from the farmers and neighboring farms to the suppliers and food processors, nothing is left unchecked.

our protein chips are proud to wear this label. because keeping it fresh and natural is something we’re passionate about. but there’s another reason, and this is close to our hearts. living a healthy lifestyle and eating clean, non-gmo foods is something that is also good for the environment. and that’s important to the future and our kids.

so stick with us! we’ve got the answers to why, how, and what for – right here on the i won! blog. we care about the food we eat, and we know you do too.

new year, new you: 5 ways to eat organic

making healthy choices with your food is a great way to kick off the new year. not only is it good for your body, it’s also good for the environment. so let’s get started! we’ve got a few tips on how to eat more organically without breaking the bank!

5 ways to eat organic

keep it local

before you trek to the supermarket, start your grocery shopping at the local farmers’ market. it’s a healthy alternative to buying supermarket organic produce, not to mention a fresher source of meats, fish, dairy and eggs.

avoid the dirty dozen

there are 12 high-risk fruits and vegetables that you need to avoid. affectionately known as the dirty dozen, these fruits and veggies contain the highest levels of pesticides. stick to the organic version of these 12 culprits:

  • peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers
  • celery, nectarines, strawberries
  • cherries, pears, grapes (imported)
  • spinach, lettuce, potatoes

buy in season

no matter where you live, there’s a season for everything! plan your weekly menu plan around which produce is in season. it’s fresher, more nutritious, and healthier for the environment.

check the label

look for foods that carry the usda organic label (especially when buying anything from the list of dirty dozen, mentioned above).

buy more low-risk fruits and veggies

the environmental working group has also created a list of 12 low-risk fruits and veggies that contain the lowest levels of pesticides. these are safe to eat:

  • papaya, broccoli, cabbage
  • bananas, kiwi, sweet peas (frozen)
  • asparagus, mango, pineapple
  • sweet corn (frozen), avocado, onions

you’ll love the feeling you get when you switch to more healthy ingredients. that’s one of the reasons why we use only the best, non-gmo and organic ingredients in i won! protein chips. simply start with a shopping list and prioritize your choices based on the 5 tips we’ve listed above. and pretty soon you’ll experience that i won! moment too, and the unmistakable feeling of winning.
